During the summer days you may not be requiring your heating systems, but as the sun fades and colder nights draw in, the chill in the air makes people want to reach out for their heating systems “ON” button.

If your boiler breaks down in the middle of the winters, you will not only end up with no hot water but will have the same cold inside your room so it’s a good idea to get your boilers checked in summers.

Here are some ways to keep your heating system in top notch condition.

Take care of the Pipes

When it’s really cold outside, pipes can freeze due to extreme low temperatures, blocking the flow of water eventually ceasing the heating process.

Use the Settings on Your Boiler

To get the maximum efficiency of your heating system get to know your boiler well, program your boiler according to the behavior of your family members. Use the setting accordingly to keep your house warm when you need it.

Use the timer and thermostat to provide heating and hot water where and when you need it. Make sure to set the timer an hour before the earliest riser in the house and set it off when everyone leaves for work. Similarly, set it on an hour before you reach home after work, making your house comfy and warm.

Get your radiators fixed:

If you still feel the chills when your heating is on, take some time out to have a thorough check of your radiators to see if they feel warm on the top and bottom.

If you find out cold patches on your radiator, possibility is that air could have leaked in to your central heating system. Get your radiator bled to release the air stuck inside.

Watch the Pressure

To experience a better and efficient heating you need to keep an eye on the pressure gauge.

It is not that complicated as it sounds, there is a gauge on the front of the boiler. Make sure the gauge is between 1 – 1.5 bar and keep on checking it periodically.

If you notice a pressure drop get your boiler topped up, this is a simple task once you know how to do it, go through the manual for instructions, if you aren’t sure how to do it ask your plumber to show you how it’s done. The next time you will be doing it yourself.

Stay Safe

Carbon monoxide poisoning is the deadliest risk associated with a boiler, worn out and old boilers usually release carbon monoxide fumes into the house which cannot be sensed by us. To find out whether your boiler is releasing carbon monoxide simply check the pilot light, if it is yellow it’s a warning sign, call in a gas safe registered engineer or plumber to get this problem solved.

Installation of carbon monoxide sensors is a good idea as well, it will alert you when there is high amounts of carbon monoxide in the air.

The steps above are easy to implement and can make a vast difference in the efficiency of your central heating system and can save money, time and even life. Regular checkups of your boiler prolong its life which in turn gives you a better heating experience
